- Alvin Bruursema, age 86 of Byron Center, went to be with his Lord February 16, 2016. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Eunice Bruursema; his parents Tyce and Jennie Bruursema; his son Jim Bruursema; his granddaughter Lisa Boersma; his brother Ken Bruursema and his sister Mary Hoeksema.
Al will be lovingly remembered by his children: Gary (Terrie) Bruursema, Sharon (Jim) Smith, Susan (Robert) Morris, and Mary Jo (Dan) Groenveld; the joys of his life, his 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; his brothers and sisters: Tyce (Alva) Bruursema, Marvin (Shirley) Bruursema, Annamae (Bob) Tanner, John (Mary) Hoeksema, Edward (Marjorie) Bruursema, and Dennis Bruursema; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Bud (Theresa) DeVries and Norm (Shirley) DeVries; and many nieces and nephews.
Al served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge, he owned and operated Al’s Sunoco. For 30 years, he volunteered on the Byron Township Volunteer Fire Department, 7 years as the chief. He was a lifelong member of the First Byron Center Christian Reformed Church. Al loved to serve and volunteered with Mel Trotter Ministries, Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, and Crossroads Bible Institute-Prison Ministries.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 AM, Saturday, February 20, 2016, at First Byron Center Christian Reformed Church, 2450 85th St SW, Byron Center, with Reverend Tom Groelsema officiating. Interment will be at Winchester Cemetery. Relatives and friends may meet with Al’s family Friday, February 19, 2016, from 3-7 PM at the Cook Funeral Home, Byron Center Chapel, 2067 84th SW, Byron Center. Contributions in memory of Al may be made to Hospice of Holland or Mel Trotter Ministries or Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services.
